Today's stop is...
So many wonderful thoughts come to mind when I think of Florida, that it was difficult to narrow the long list of items I could have included on my license plate. Mind you... this license plate is my second attempt, as I had even more "things" on the first one!
With only a 6-1/2" X 12-1/2" (unfinished) space in which to convey Florida, I had to go with the obvious - sun, sand and surf. And I added my personal favorite warm-weather "thing" - palms. I've been all about palms since I started this blog in late 2008, while living in Iowa. Even then I was dreaming about living in a tropical place, never imagining that dream would actually come true. On June 23, we'll have been Floridians for two years.
And to give credit where it's due... we wouldn't be living in paradise if it weren't for almost 30 years of hubby's hard work while living in Iowa, working for John Deere. Believe it or not, John Deere manufactures cotton pickers in Des Moines, Iowa!
I remember when... in about 1989, all of us John Deere wives were invited to the factory for a luncheon and tour. The plant manager told us that to help the company and our family prosper, we should "buy cotton." He said, "Buy cotton clothes. Buy blue jeans." I completely understood his unspoken words - "Buy quilting cotton." - and took them to heart!

When this John Deere cotton picker - technically, a "cotton harvester" - photo appeared in an article about American Made Brand fabrics, in the March issue of American Quilter magazine...
...my husband was the one to pipe up, "That's a model 7760 harvester!" Who else would know?! And would you believe, just one cotton harvester costs more than $800,000?! Wow!
So with hard work for a great company, our dreams have come true. We're living in a climate that suits our preferences for warmth and sunshine.
And don't you know? All our favorite people live in Florida!
From where we live, it's just a 75-minute drive to see them and many other attractions like Universal Studios (Blue Man Group!), Sea World, and Legoland.
We also like historic St. Augustine where lovely Tiffany furniture and glass can be seen at Flagler Collage. And oh! If you're Louis Comfort Tiffany fan (be sure to read "Clara and Mr. Tiffany" by Susan Vreeland), don't miss a visit to Winter Park, Florida to the Morse Museum where you'll see the largest collection of Tiffany glass. It's breathtaking.

My license plate design uses 14 of the 50 American Made Brand solids. If you like what you see, you're welcome to download and use this design as you wish. Click here for instructions that include print-outs for the foundation paper-pieced sun, and appliqué elements. Appliqué pieces were backed with a fusible web, cut out, ironed to background fabric, and machine-appliquéd with a narrow and shortened-length zig-zag stitch.
If you machine appliqué on a Bernina sewing machine, use the #20 appliqué foot, and don't forget to feed the bobbin thread (I use #60-weight The Bottom Line) through the bobbin's "finger." This keeps the bobbin thread drawn to the bottom, forming a prettier stitch on top.
I pretty much exclusively use Aurifil threads for piecing, machine- and hand-appliqué, and quilting. I recommend two-ply 50-weight thread, the one on the orange-colored spool.
A Bismarck palm, in my front yard! |
Have you seen some of the license plates that were posted to blogs during the past two weeks? Michele of QuiltsFromMyCrayonBox is doing a great job of creating a collage of each week of license plate blocks. All 50 blocks will later be made into one, very neat quilt!

To answer the question of where in Florida I would like to visit, I had a son move to Miami and another one move to Naples, but then one moved up to Orlando and the other moved to Tampa. I liked all four cities, but never made it to St Augustine, so that would be my pick. Confusing? That's how my mind works...

A few years back I lived in Florida, all over the state, eastside, westside, Panhandle, middle, and South. Have family members on vacation there right now and kin that live there. It is a beaufiful state in the interior as well as the coasts. Everyone needs to visit there at least once and get sand in your shoes so you will return there.
ReplyDeleteI would love another visit to Orlando. Our kids were 10 & 14 when we took a family vacation to Disney World. They are 25 & 29 now & we finally have the trip paid off. lol
ReplyDeleteIt would be fun to go now that they are adults.
I've never been to Florida but for their senior year, I would like to take my twin daughters to Disney to run the half marathon! I just love your block and I love John Deere!

ReplyDeleteWe go to Florida every year to visit friends and family mid-February to mid-March. We stay in West Palm Beach, Davie (near Ft Lauderdale), Venice, and Gulf Breeze (near Pensacola). ReplyDeleteLinda, What a fun block! It definitely speaks Florida - LOVE it! Thought I'd stop by and tell you my husband is IN the harvester in that picture that ran in the American Quilter. No surprise they didn't let him drive it; he was excited enough just to ride in it. He went to great lengths to ensure the cotton in your American Made fabric is truly grown in the US of A!
ReplyDeleteOh, man! I would *LOVE* to go back to the Destin area for a week in a beach-front condo this September! :D Linda, you did a really great job coming up with a FL plate.

Hi Linda,
ReplyDeleteI'm from Louisiana, so visiting Disney has happened a couple of times in recent years. We've never been to Miami, so I'd really like to find myself there for a few days of sticking my toes in the sand.
You did a super job on the Florida license plate block. I love it. The colors are perfect, and they express the Florida life. If I could go back to Florida, I would visit Deerfield Beach and my cousins, Susan and Melissa. I've not seen them in 13 years. Thanks for the opportunity.
ReplyDeleteI would love to visit St. Augustine after reading your wonderful post. And I love your license plate - you really captured Florida! Thanks for the chance to win!

ReplyDeleteWould love to visit St. Augustine. Beautiful license plate! tweetyb936@aol.com
ReplyDeleteLinda, your license plate is perfect for Florida. Where in FLA would I live to go -- well that is a hard one. I've been to a few cities a long time ago (college age - St. Pete's Beach and the tip of Florida. More recently (10 yrs ago) I visited a friend in Naples and she took me to Captiva, Sanibel and Ft. Myers areas. That was really neat. I love riding a bike around the islands. Now -- any place would be fine with me.
ReplyDeleteI'd love to go back to Orlando where my husband was stationed in the 60's. I'm sure everything will look very different!
ReplyDeletenicolesender(at)yahoo(dot)com
My best friend grew up in Orlando. She loved it. I would live to visit Disneyworld and LegoLand (so would my boys--and my hubby is included in that "boy" category!).
ReplyDeleteIt's fun to "travel" on this tour because I want to travel this huge country of ours, but don't get opportunities.
And yes, I want the bundle!
reillyr2(at)hotmail(dot)com
Your colours and sunny design say it all! Your new home state looks so inviting, and what a coincidence that the colours one associates with Florida are your favourites :-) Where would I like to go for a holiday in Florida? That's a no-brainer … Your place, of course, my dear friend!
ReplyDeleteI've always wanted to visit Miami.
ReplyDeleteYour block really says Florida, you did a great job! Since I don't have kids my favorite place to visit is Key West. (With kids it would've been Orlando! And I did take my niece and nephew there when they visited from Denmark.). My husband and I have vacationed in Key West twice, in the winter time, and we'd love to go back. Florida in the summer, is too hot for me.
ReplyDeleteI love the license plate and that you've used so many colors on it. I'd love to go to Disney World and to the beaches. I remember the warm water even though it was many moons ago when I visited. Thanks.
ReplyDeleteVery pretty block. I love that you include tips for others when making the block, very nice.
ReplyDeleteGreat job on this post! I like how you incorporated the John Deere cotton harvester. I hope we can bring more products back to the US for manufacture. Since I live in Florida and have been all over and work full time, my favorite Florida vacation is a staycation, where I can sew all day and night and my husband reads all day and night and we don't worry about having to be anywhere or do anything. Maybe I will try that this summer.
ReplyDeleteOh, I remember my visit last autumn and would love to come once more :-)
ReplyDeleteJust have to say: I love, love, love your quilt block (not that I'm biased as a fellow Floridian). I expecially love the way you used the different blues to capture the waves. We love to visit Fort Myers Beach (only 2.5 hours from our home in Miami).
ReplyDeleteinfo {at} cocoplumbeachhouse {dot} com.
P.S. we too have a Bismarck palm in our front yard. :)
I love Florida! I'd love to visit Key West or go back to Miami.

ReplyDeleteGreat work with the license plate block. I have never visited Florida but I would really like to one day visit Universal Studios, the Kennedy Space Centre and LEGOLAND. The rest of my Florida time would be spent soaking up sunshine on the mainland beaches or on an island off the coast. Thanks for sharing and offering a giveaway.

I would have to choose Orlando, as that's where my son wants to go. He wants to go to Disney World, is that in Orlando?, and Universal Studios. He's Intellectually disabled, so I'm going with Orlando, because he's probably smarter than me, lol.
ReplyDeleteI have been to Fort Lauderdale a long time ago while in University. If its hot I'd like to go there especially during my winter break!

When I was little, we went to Epcot and to the beach. I liked the beach better; I remember lots of cool seashells, which you don't get where I live. So I'm probably go back there.
ReplyDeleteI tested if I was a no-reply and I think I was good, but if not: jhunsberger (at) gmail (dot) com
Disneyworld! It's so much fun!
ReplyDeleteDefinitely the Everglades, but I'd try to avoid the height of mosquito season. :)
ReplyDeleteWe would love to take our son to Disney. We would love to stay at a campground with water attractions about an hour away from Orlando. we would also like to camp on the beach for a few nights. thanks for the chance to win.
ReplyDeleteI missed your giveaway, but I sure to like your Florida plate, Linda! I never knew that tip about the bobbin "finger"!
ReplyDeleteI know I've missed the giveaway but I wanted to comment anyway. I don't know a lot about the lesser populated states in the US, but I did know that Iowa was really involved in grain farming. I'm not surprised and kind of delighted to know your husband worked for John Deere. A very popular brand here on Yorke Peninsula South Australia. Aren't the farmers and machinery men funny with their knowledge of model numbers! I should say though, my family are red tractor and harvester loyal. They are "very slightly" cheaper in Australia! But interestingly still around the 800k mark!
