17th Blog-iversary!

Happy Australia Day to my friends in Australia! And happy blogiversary to me.

It's difficult to wrap my mind around the fact that 17 years ago today, I wrote my first FlourishingPalms blog post.

17 years!

My first post was about January 26 being Australia Day. In honor of the occasion I made pavlova, a traditional Australian baked meringue dessert reputed to have been named for the ballerina, Anna Pavlova. Back then, in 2009, I was into all things Australia because our daughter lived in Sydney, and I visited there multiple times when we lived in Iowa.

For the first seven years of blogging - writing 716 blog posts during that seven years - I had each year of posts printed into a book. As I recall, the first few years of books were $40 to $50 each. By the time I'd had the seventh year printed for $80, I decided it wasn't worth it to continue that practice. I just check a site to see what it would cost to print 70 posts from 2025 and the price was about $148 - still not worth it.

While some quilt makers have told me my blog posts are my legacy, and I should document everything I've written about by printing a book, I have strong doubts that my descendants will care one way or another about what I had to say about my quilts or my process for making them.

Only for me is it satisfying to recognize that I've continued to regularly write blog posts while many other creative bloggers I avidly followed in the early days have long ago let their blogs lapse. For me, each post is a journal - a means to document all my makes, whether they're quilts or other creative efforts to which I've applied my "flourishing palms."

I remain very happy with the blog name flourishingpalms, and use @flourishingpalms on Instagram too. In case you didn't know, I chose the name because it signifies three things for me:
  1. It's a favorite Bible verse: "The righteous will flourish like a palm tree, planted in the house of the Lord." Psalm 92:12
  2. I've always admired and been fascinated by palm trees, even making a palm tree quilt while living in Iowa. (See below.)
  3. I appreciate the play on words, with "palm" not only referring to the tree, but referring to the creative efforts of my hands - my palms.
Here's the palm quilt hanging in our Florida house.

There's one special block... a sun chair sitting in a field of Iowa corn, where a palm is also growing!

The quilt name is I Can Dream, Can't I?

Little did I know, back in 2005 when I made the quilt, that I would one day be living in Florida where palms are a regular sight. We've been here 13½ years now.

What I've Been Doing Lately
I finished a skein of donated variegated pastel yarn. I previously posted about the baby afghan I made. Using the same knitted pattern, the remaining yarn made a piece that's only 13" X 26". I've dubbed it a lovey, or perhaps it could be a doll blanket.
13" X 26"

"Beautiful Texture Baby Blanket" knitting pattern info

Braiding continues on my rag rug that's now 40" X 50", making it completely importable. It's heavy!

Trying to be a little more creative with the rug design, you can see where I added a second braid that's entirely orange.

Along the end I'm inserting another short, light blue braid. I plan to repeat the orange design on the next long side, and add another light blue braid at the end. My thrift store investments (several years ago) in two flat bed sheets - orange, and blue print - were good choices.

I've also begun another take-along sewing machine project. My five-pound Janome Derby sewing machine is perfect for this.

I'm piecing to "do something" with dozens and dozens of triangles I found in scrap bins. I know some triangles are offcuts from making Posh Penelope, but I can't remember where others came from. Some HSTs are finishing at 2½", and others at 2¼". No matter. I plan to work out a way to make them all into one quilt.

Another Fun Thing
For blog-readers who are not Floridians, you won't recognize the structure below, but it's a Twistee Treat ice cream stand.

I discovered Twisted Treat in 2020, stopping at one after getting our first COVID vaccinations - my reward for being a good girl. 😀

I adore their soft-serve ice cream, but seldom have opportunities to eat it because the nearest location is 15 miles away. All Twistee Treat structures are distinctive like this, with a cone base and an ice-cream-and-toppings roof. Some also have sprinkles!

The picture above is of the stand that's going up near me. Oh boy! I'll be able to get there by golf cart! This is supposed to open in February. I'm closely watching @twisteetreat on Instagram.

I can't end this post without saying 💕 thank you 💕 to everyone who's been a blog-reader.

While I miss quilters who once-upon-a-time read my posts (and I considered friends) I remain ever-so-grateful to you who take a moment to read and comment. I love hearing from you! Even those of you who have been commenting as "Anonymous," I hope you know I am responding to all comments. Whether you receive an email reply, or a response in the comments of that blog post, I appreciate you!

Maybe I'll keep hearing from you... for another 17 years? Linda

  2. Many congratulations on your 17 year blogging anniversary, that's a whole lot of writing! But we do it because we enjoy it, dont we. Are you aware about the long running feud between Australia and New Zealand concerning the pavlova? Both countries claim to have invented and named it first! As a proud Kiwi, I'm barracking for New Zealand, of course. But it really is a tasty, but very sweet, dessert, isnt it, a summertime treat indeed.

    1. Thanks very much, Anonymous! What nice things to say. Thank you for reading my posts! Wish you - and many others! - could join me when Twistee Treat opens. I need to start dieting now, so I can afford those yummy soft serve calories!

  5. 17 years went by way to fast. I do read your blog adventures. As one of many first time quiters that you encouraged and taught. A few of us are still around and remember and talk about things you taught us that many years ago. Most of us that are still around here still do quilt for the missions.

    1. Hi Anonymous! I'm guessing you're a friend from Iowa, from Stitchin' Mission days. Yes indeed, it is amazing how quickly 17 years have passed. I'm delighted I could play a role in you becoming a quiltmaker, and being a generous maker at that! I still enjoy teaching. Bless you, friend.

  7. Congratulations on your Blog-iversary. I loved seeing your palm tree quilt. It’s so cute. Bet you don’t miss the cold that is happening up north in Iowa. Not too bad here in Wyoming. I like to refer to smallish baby quilts as lovers. Both my babies had one!

  8. Happy bloganniversary! 17 years!!! and so much posts!!! It's always a pleasure to look at your blog. I discover it because of your stunning temperature quilt. I love so much your palm tree quilt! Always interesting to read your reflexions.I had the same about printing my blog posts. And had the same conclusion. My children will not be interested... Your rag rug is amazing!!! I wish you and us, your readers long years of blogging :-)

  9. Excellent! Let's go for another 17 years! I regret not having blog books anymore, but agree that it's not worth the cost. I got the blog book idea from you originally. And your rug is looking wonderful!

  10. Wow, seventeen years of documenting your art is amazing as are the reasons you chose the name flourishing palms. I looked at some videos on braiding rugs as they are so interesting. Yours is coming along so quickly, it seems.

  11. Congratulations! I love getting a peek into your process and planning. I'm still mystified by your quilting abilities on a domestic machine! The last photo book I put together was over $100 each so I completely understand stopping the hardcopies. Your wee blanket is the perfect size for an infant car seat! Your HSTs might be from making binding, I started putting together scraps to become familiar with my new machine and it became a "scarppy" quilt for our family to snuggle under on the couch during TV time. I will email you a photo of the flimsy. Cheers to another 17 years! I'll still be here if you are.

    1. Hi Pamela! Thank you! And you always say the nicest things. Next time you happen to be in Florida, you'll have to look for Twistee Treat. There are 37 locations across the state. I also appreciate your compliments on the palm quilt and rug. I'm delighted my palm quilt quickly found a home on the wall, once we moved into our house here. And the rug... I'm addicted to working on it. I plan to use it on the floor of our recently-enclosed lanai. More details about the project coming when the room is finished.

  14. A belated Happy Anniversary! Wow, 17 years of blogging, amazing endurance! I do love that palm tree quilt, especially that one special block! I've also documented my quilts (but not blog posts) in books every year or two. I figure one of these years I'll have forgotten how to use a computer and it will be nice to see the various quilts in book form once more. I too lament the fact that nearly all of my "favorite" bloggers have dropped out or gone to instagram. Nowhere near as satisfying to just see one photo occasionally. So, kudos to you for persevering in blogland!

  15. Linda, I have fond memories of meeting at your home when you formed a committee to establish a Modern Quilt Guild chapter in the Villages. Those first months the group met at "Sharkey's" and it has grown from there. I am amazed by your talent and love reading your blogs. Although my sewing days have become less and less due to the arthritis in my hands, I love your new braided rug and with each new picture, I am more and more excited about maybe giving it a try. Keep up the blogs and instructions and stay warm the next week. It is going to be brutal for us in Florida.

    1. Carla? Kathy? I’m trying to remember who Doby Red might be. I'm happy to say that Central Florida Modern Quilt Guild is going strong - 47 members now, and in November we'll have been a chapter for 14 years. I'm glad you were amongst the first members. I'm sorry to know arthritis has become a problem for you, but I understand. You're not the only one. Indeed, Central Florida will be cold this week! The lowest temp since we moved here, is expected: 21F. It's almost like living in the Midwest!

  17. Congratulations!! it's satisfying to have a large body of work, isn't it? I hear you on missing bloggy friends who have long dropped off - I'm about to hit 18 years and I miss the folks I used to chat with and lost during a couple of moves and a rebrand

  18. Linda, 17 years! 🎉 Congrats! Not many bloggers have stuck it out that long. I remember falling in love with palm trees the first time I visited my husband's hometown in California. They have some impressive palm tree lined streets there leading up to farms. I enjoyed and appreciated hearing about all 3 reasons you went with Flourishing Palms.

  19. Congratulations on your 17th Blog-iversary Linda! I'm glad it all started with Australia!!! I continue to marvel at your productivity, creativity and longevity (with so many others falling by the way) and hope you will bless us with photos of your lovely work for a long time yet!

  20. Linda, you should know, I look for your new blog posts often. Sometimes I catch up and see two at a time, however that is rare. I have even gone back into past posts to get more info about something. Your talent and willingness to share is a beautiful thing. I thank you.

  21. Belated Happy Blogiversary Linda! I'm sorry I missed your special day! I am enjoying easing my way back into the world of patchwork-quilting bloggers and it's good to find many like yourself are still posting consistently and providing lots of inspiration.

  22. Congratulations on 17 years! My 15th blog anniversary is coming up in a few weeks and, like you, my mind can’t really take that in. I didn’t start quilting til my late 30’s, which is how I still like to think of myself, but that can’t be right if I’ve been quilting for 15 years now. I hope you get 17 more and beyond! We just got a Jeni’s Splendid Ice Creams close to us and I’m over the moon about it, so yay for your neighborhood Twistee Treats going up. Great way to celebrate anything and everything!

  23. Congratulations on 17 years! It's an amazing accomplishment Linda. I will continue to enjoy your posts although I still don't get the email notifications and find it hard to remember checking for posts since Bloglovin is no longer a reliable source. I don't miss blogging. I don't miss Instagram posting. I do still like to keep up on a handful of people like yourself but otherwise find it all too time consuming now. I don't know how you keep up. Enjoy that ice cream when they open. Sounds like a nice place for weekly date with the hubs.
