Thread Giveaway!

BLOG GIVEAWAY CLOSED

Do you remember the good old gays of Blogger, when you came across a giveaway every month? Well, it's been much too long since I hosted a blog giveaway, and am delighted to offer one now.

Scanfil Thread Company has graciously offered to give away, to one of my blog-readers, a three-spool set of their wonderful thread.

I can say "wonderful" with sincerity because I have begun using Scanfil myself since discovering it at the company's vendor booth at QuiltCon 2025 in Phoenix.

Scanfil is made in the Netherlands by a family-owned company that began in 1970.

Scanfil is organic cotton thread.

Scanfil 50-weight 2-ply is fine, light-weight, strong, and is my favorite thread for piecing.

I've been using it to piece my scrappy Filmstrip Quilt.

My piecing stitches are so fine! (Bernina 2.5 stitch length.)

I especially appreciate that Scanfil thread doesn't pigtail around my sewing machine needle (like another brand).

A happy bonus is having this used-up wood spool. Can I get a refill? Ha, ha! I'll be keeping these spools with eyes peeled for a project in which to use them.

While I've only purchased the 500-yard spools (thus far), I've got my eye on a 5000 yard cone (or two).
5000-yard cone shown: color Safari, #4853

Scanfil also makes a 30-weight, 2-ply thread that I definitely want to try for domestic machine quilting.

  1. I buy thread that is strong for the purpose I want, fine or thicker weight depending again on what I want, lint free and available! I use thread for machine piecing, machine embroidery, machine quilting and of course handwork! I have a huge stash from my mom that I use for sewing clothes. I looked at the set options and like the 50/2 weight of stormy greys. I will definitely try this thread.--TerryK@OnGoingProjects (quilting00@aol.com)

  2. Thank you for the chance to add to my Scanfil 50 wt threads. The Denim Blue 3 spool thread set will be my choice.
Several months ago I purchased 5 spools of the 50 wt. thread and have been extremely happy with the quality, durability and strength of the thread. There is no fraying, pilling or breaking with this thread. I have used the thread for piecing and quilting on special projects and the thread adds a extra beauty to my work. Your previous post had me interested in the thread, and now I am sold on it. Thank you again. Sunshine and Smiles, Donna Weeks (dweeks4602@gmail.com) PS fingers crossed that I am your lucky recipient of this offer.

  3. I buy thread that works in my longarm, which is currently Aurifil and I haven’t figured out why. I look for a strong thread that isn’t lint-y. I use almost exclusively 50 weight for both piecing and quilting. My choice would be 50 weight tan shades. I haven’t heard of this company until I read your posts, so thanks!

  6. Of course I would love to enter! I'd especially like a thread that doesn't "pigtail" around the needle like another that I know and love except for that annoying habit. I use 50 wt for piecing and machine quilting and would like to try the baby pastels. Thanks for hosting this giveaway.

  7. I've never heard of this brand, so now I'm curious. I know about that pigtailing. I use the thread I do because my machine seems to like it, and I use thread for just about anything (even cutting my cinnamon roll dough!). Wendy at piecefulthoughts@gmail.com

  8. I would love to try Scanfil thread! I choose my thread based on its strength and durability. Who wants a thread that's going to shred and fall apart after washing the piece? Not me! I use my threads mostly for piecing my quilt blocks and also for FMQ. I use other special thread for machine embroidery.

  9. Hi Linda. I have never heard of this thread and would love to win some to try on my machines, Bernina and Gammill long arm. I use mostly cotton threads by Superior and Aurifil when piecing and quilting especially when making the QoV quilts. Thanks for this opportunity. Your Filmstrip quilt is looking great!!

  10. Linda I use thread to pice my quilts and clothing. I like a strong thread to insure the piecing is secure. I love the fact this thread is organic. I have never heard of this thread and am considering buying some as you have never led me astray with your recommendations! I like the tan shades. 50 weight is my preferred thread but the 30 sounds interesting as well. Rebecca Chianese rchianese26@gmail.com

  11. I found this interesting -- I have never seen that thread! I use lots of thread, mostly for piecing and longarm quilting. King Tut is what works best on my longarm and I love the variegated colors. I piece my quilts mostly with Essential thread from Connecting Threads because it works with my machine and is reasonably priced. I also have an assortment of threads of different brands (Aurifil and others) that I use as needed. I looked at the Scanfil thread sets and they have so many pretty ones! I am particularly drawn to the Denim Blues.

  12. What a great giveaway! I choose thread for strength and color. I enjoy using Guterman, connecting threads and Missouri Star. My Scanfil choice would be 50 wt Achromatics. I mainly use my thread for piecing. Tobyyellow@yahoo.com

  13. I have alot of random handmedown threads though i am interested in selecting the best pieicing thread for me and my machine. My scanfil choice would be neutral colors. glassbyet@yahoo.com

  14. I use various threads depending on the project and materials. I like a 50 wt. for piecing and really enjoy using King Tut for my small quilting pieces. I’ve not heard of this thread brand or seen it in quilting shops. Would love to try it!

  15. What a fun giveaway. I like the tan bundle best. 50 wt is my preferred wt for my piecing and quilting. For piecing, I go with neutral colors and love buying cones. For quilting, I go for matching colors so smaller spools work best for me so I can get lots and lots of variety! Thanks for the giveaway.

  16. This thread is new to me, also. I generally use guterman for piecing, with Superior Bottom Line in the bobbin. I especially like that the Scandi spool is wooden, rather than plastic. I would choose Stormy Greys 50 wt.
    Thank you for the opportunity.

  17. This is such a timely blog post for me. I am in the market to find new thread. I have tried Aurifil in the past and my Juki machine doesn't like it very much. I have been using Gutermann that I purchased from JoAnn, but I need to find a new supplier and might as well look at all options. I mainly use thread for piecing. My top requirements for thread are durability and low lint. I love that Scanfil is organic. I am going to have to try it out.

  18. This is lovely! I love trying new thread. I pick thread for durability. and of course color! I read your blogs everytime I recieve it but don't comment all the time. I love looking at your quilts in your blog, and instagram. I go by a different name in instagram. Heidi Bartley bachbartley@yahoo.com I make quilts and bags for family. I would love the Baby Pastels. My oldest granddaughter is expecting our first Great Granddaughter. 5 Generations!! I am making lots of baby items that she has picked out including lots of embroidery for me to do.

  19. I have not heard of them before. Love the idea of wooden spools! I would choose the achromatic set. I look for threads that leave little lint, are strong and threads that my Bernina likes. My go to is a 50wt thread. I mostly buy the large spools because I use them for both piecing and on the longarm. I am Mary at rkjrk5 (at) aol (dot) com

  20. 90% of my thread is in the gray category, occasionally I go to a white or black, but only if the main fabric is solid. Though I do a few odds and ends of sewing mainly I piece quilts.
Lately I have been working on a few smaller sensory tag blankets and stuffed animals.

  21. I just love those denim blue colors of thread because I'm working on a denim art quilt right now. I got a Sashiko book for Christmas and I'm using it to make a different pattern on each point of a star. It's a portable lap project that I'm almost finished stitching with the authentic Sashiko thread. Just like fabric, I'm slowly becoming a thread snob. My Mom taught me not to cheap out on thread since it is literally holding your hard work together. I love Aurifil and I am SURE that once I try Scanfil there won't be any going back! becky.pitt@gmail.com.

  22. I tried to write my name , but was not successful. I would love to try the 50 weight thread in Grays. I have been using 80 weight thread for piecing and other weights depending on the project. I am open to new adventures with thread. I use thread for piecing, quilting, embroidery by hand a by machine. I am definitely intrigued by this Scandfil thread. ireneriedman@gmail.com

  23. I am piecing, quilting, and going back to clothes making. I was a loyal thread snob but for a time was willing to try other cotton brands. Agree that I need bigger cone spools now. @harmanfamily Alice Harman

  24. Thanks for this giveaway. Actually your recommendation means a lot to me. I choose thread based on low lint and color. Cotton. I am not currently “ married” to any particular thread manufacturer. Neutral threads for piecing would be a nice way to try out this thread line. Thank you.

  25. Linda, I am paying attention. The thread you describe sounds like it may be a dream to work with. Good on you that you tried it out, liked it and are sharing your success with it. I look for quality in thread NON LINT, durability and practicality. I tend to piece, hand quilt and machine quilt with a lot of the same threads - 50 wt is my favorite and in the Scanfil arena either the grays or tans would be put to good use. During my move I said goodbye to lots of spools of thread that had been utilized over the years in fashion sewing projects and I'm pretty sure they won't be missed. Thank Scanfil for sponsoring your giveaway and thank you for offering it! Rosemary V

  26. I've always used Aurifil 50W out of habit but I've wanted to try the Scanfil ever since you mentioned it...Just hadn't tried to find it. I would love to win some...denim blues or the the stormy greys would be nice for piecing.

  27. Love your filmstrip quilt. I believe I still use the same brand of thread you recommended when I first started quilting! 😉 But would love to try something new! Hope you’re doing well.

  28. I use a well known brand that seems to be the favorite of my machine. I use 50 weight for piecing and rarely do my own quilting. I never heard that term pigtailing but I know exactly what you mean! I’d start out with neutrals of course and give this brand a try! Thanks for the chance. Mary Ann ( mascanlon49@hotmail.com)

  29. I love trying new threads…would love to try Scanfil!!

  30. I have been a longtime Aurifil user. My go to is Dove Grey for piecing, and often quilting because of the way the color blends with so many fabrics and gives wonderful texture. I have never had a problem with thread breaks which is very important to me, as well. I would love to try the Scanfil - I have been trying to use products that are better for the environment lately and this thread really intrigues me after your comments! I I would love to try the Stormy Greys set if I win 😊 thank you Linda and Scanfil Threads!

  31. I haven't seen this brand before. My go-to thread is Mettler (my LQS carries it). I always buy cones, and I do all of my piecing with either a light/medium grey for light colored fabric, or a dark/charcoal grey for dark fabrics. I also do my own quilting on my domestic machine, and I use Mettler thread for that, often in variegated colors. I’d love to give this thread a try, and Stormy Greys would be perfect. Thanks for the chance to win! Candy (canbecan(at)icloud(dot)com)

  32. I use Aurifil for piecing and Glide for longarm quilting. I like both of these brands for their durability and color choices. Thank you for the opportunity to try out this new-to-me brand. You can reach me at dfbraskey@aol.com. Thank you Linda! Stephanie Braskey

  33. I have been using Aurifil thread to piece and quilt my original designed quilts for years, because I like its strength, durability and low lint. Recently I tried Wonderfil thread and found it to be an acceptable option. I would love to try your thread choice and see how it performed in my machine.

  34. I have never tried this thread but would love to! My most important criteria is low lint for my piecing thread. I piece with cotton thread but prefer to quilt with polyester (although I have used cotton for that too on occasion!). I have been having issues with Auriful, in recent purchases, not unwinding of the spool properly when I start a new spool, resulting in waste. I have tried Wonderfil as a replacement, but found it too linty. Still searching for alternatives!
